Minutes of the April 29, 2002 meeting at the IHSAA Offices.

MINUTES

The minutes of the March 22, 2002 were recommended for approval.  A motion for approval was made by Joseph Trimboli; seconded by Patrick Mapes; motion passed 17-0.

 

 

APPROVAL TO TRADE IHSAA AUTOMOBILES

Associate Commissioner Craft recommended that two automobiles be traded in on the purchase of two new vehicles.  A motion to approve the recommendation and accept the lowest of three bids was made by Phil Hoskins; seconded by Michael Powell; motion passed 17-0.

 

 

2001-02 BOYS & GIRLS TRACK & FIELD TOURNAMENT STARTERS

Assistant Commissioner Cox presented a list of track and field starters who have applied to work the 2002 tournament series. 

 

 

2001-02 GIRLS TENNIS TOURNAMENT OFFICIALS

Assistant Commissioner Wynns presented a list of USTA officials who may assist with the 2002 girls tennis tournament series.

 

 

2001-02 BASEBALL TOURNAMENT UMPIRES

Associate Commissioner Craft presented a list of baseball umpires who have applied to work the 2002 baseball tournament series. 

 

 

2001-02 SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT UMPIRES

Assistant Commissioner Searcy presented a list of softball umpires who have applied to work the 2002 softball tournament series. 

 

 

TRANSFERS

Assistant Commissioner Craft reported on transfers that have been ruled upon during the 2000-01 school year.  This report included the following actions as of April 25, 2002:

SPORTSMANSHIP

Assistant Commissioner Wynns reported on the unsportsmanlike conduct reports that have been received this year.  The report  indicated the number of ejections per school per sport, as well as the action taken.  Up until this point, unsportsmanlike conduct reports for the sport of baseball are down from last year at this time.

 

 

FINANCIAL REPORTS ON WINTER SPORTS

Associate Commissioner Craft presented the attendance and financial figures for the 2001-02 Boys Basketball Tournament Series.   The overall attendance was showed a marked improvement, with the greatest increase occurring at the sectional level.  As a result, the net income increased by approximately $28,000.  Input received from the membership regarding the four team regional format was positive.

 

Assistant Commissioner Wynns updated the Committee on the 2001-02 Girls Basketball Tournament Series.  This year the tournament series showed a decrease in total attendance of approximately 19,000 fans.  The net income reflected the decreased attendance and was reduced by approximately 15%.

 

Assistant Commissioner Searcy provided the Executive Committee with the annual attendance and financial report for the 2001-02 Gymnastics Tournament Series.  While the total attendance for the gymnastics tournament series improved to 4,667, an 8% increase in expenditures offset the increase in revenues.  As a result, the tournament series deficit of $10,570 was relatively similar to last year’s figures.

 

Assistant Commissioner Searcy presented the Executive Committee with attendance and financial data for the 2001-02 Boys and Girls Swimming and Diving Tournament Series.  For the third time in three years, swimming finished on the positive side of the ledger. The net revenue reflected an increase in state finals ticket prices, and showed a $5,000.00 improvement from last year’s figures.  In addition, the overall attendance rose to 42,755.

 

Assistant Commissioner Cox reported on the attendance and finances for the 2001-02 Wrestling Tournament Series.  Total attendance figures increased from last year by approximately 2000 fans.  Although tournament receipts were higher, expenditures  increased as well.  As a result, the net income was slighty lower than last year.

 

 

FINANCIAL REPORT

Commissioner Ress presented the monthly financial report of the Association.

 

 

LITIGATION REPORT

Attorney Robert Baker updated the Executive Committee on the current status of pending litigation against the Association.

 

 

DISTRICT III MEDIA AWARD

Sports Information Director Jerry Baker reported that Pat McKee, sportswriter for the Indianapolis Star, was presented the 2002 District II Distinguished Media Service Award on Saturday, March 23, at half time of the 3A boy’s state basketball championship game.   Mr. McKee recently observed his 20th anniversary as a member of the sports department of the Indianapolis Star, where he spent a good portion of his time either covering or supervising those who cover high school sports throughout the city and state.

A motion to adjourn the April meeting of the IHSAA Executive Committee was made by Jim Feist; seconded by Cassel White; motion passed 17-0.  The next meeting of the Executive Committee will be at IHSAA headquarters on June 7, 2002.
